Christmas time is here, and carols are some of the easiest melodies to learn on just about any instrument.  Jingle Bells, written by James Pierpont in the 19th century, is undoubtedly one of the most popular of them, despite the fact that it wasn’t written with the intention of becoming a Christmas song and the original lyrics dealt with sleigh racing. This tune now so commonly associated with the Christmas time is in fact the first song ever broadcasted from outer space.

In today’s article, I will explain a bit of the theory behind the song’s chord progressions and link you to a lesson that in my opinion is the most adequate for beginners. You can learn to play this song as a part of the special Christmas special learning path with with lyrics and strumming trainer in our Uberchord app.

Key of the Song

The original key of the song is G major, but as it often happens with popular songs, the key of the song may be adjusted to suit the preferences of the singer or the level of mastery of someone on an instrument. You may use a capo to ease the transposition of the music.

When doing research for this article I also came across a few different versions of the song, as far as chords employed is concerned. Some of them more elaborate than others. The simplest one features a I IV V7 in the key of G major. The more elaborate one includes a borrowed chord from a related key (D major), in this case an A major or A7 (V/V) which leads nicely to the last chord of the progression, D7.

In the easy version you’d have the following structure:

Verses:

I – IV – V7  (G – C – D7)

Chorus:

I – IV – I – V7 (G – C – G – D7)

The harmonically „richer” version features a new chord in the chorus:

I – IV – I – V7/V – V7  (G – C – G – A7 – D7)

Perhaps the trickiest chord out of them all will be G major. I say “perhaps” because this depends on the age of the interpreter. Refer to the following article on G Chord and the Key of G.

Chords for Jingle Bells

This is a fairly easy tune as all of the chords can be played in the first position. If you’ve been playing for a while, you probably know all of the chords needed.

!function(e,r,d){var t,c=e.getElementsByTagName(r)[0];e.getElementById(d)||(t=e.createElement(r),t.id=d,t.src=”https://uberchord-backend.firebaseapp.com/uberchord-embed-sdk.js”,c.parentNode.insertBefore(t,c))}(document,”script”,”uberchord-jssdk”);

As explained above, A7 is a rather optional chord in this context. I personally like adding it to the progression (refer to the Roman numerals above).

Few songs have become so memorable and enduring as Irving Berlin’s now classic Christmas song. The fact that Irving Berlin, the song’s composer, couldn’t write nor read music makes the song’s success even more impressive. Berlin himself was so assured of the quality of the music, that he claimed it to be the best song someone had ever written.

Judging by the song’s popularity, there might be some truth to Berlin’s statement: with an estimated 100 to 150 million copies sold worldwide, White Christmas by Bing Cosby is the most commercially successful single of all time. The version sung by him is the first one ever released. Though it originally performed poorly on the charts, it eventually rose to more recognition.

Around 500 recorded versions of the song exist today, several of which have been sung by prominent artists such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, The Beach Boys and Barbra Streisand.

The fact that this song is in the Key of A gives you options. You may either employ the following chords:

A – Bmin – E7

D – Dmin – A

Amaj – Dmaj – Dmin – Amaj  – F#min – Bmin – E7 – A

Or you may also use a capo, which will make certain sonorities easier.

G – Amin – D – C – Emin

I first heard “Uptown Girl” as sung by the Irish boyband Westlife back then when MTV was all about music videos (and not reality shows). 13-year-old me was unaware of the fact that Westlife’s rendition happened to be one of many covers of Billy Joel’s smash hit. The song was inspired by the singer’s relationship with model Elle McPherson. The single has sold over 1 million copies as of late.

One of the most famous pop songs ever is ironically enough one of the trickiest for the beginner to learn, due to the sheer amount of chords and variety in terms of chord progressions. Let’s take a closer look at them.

You can learn to playUptown Girl by Billy Joel with guitar chords, lyrics and a strumming trainer directly in the Uberchord app.

Key of the Song: E major

This song is in the Key of E major for the most part, but it features quite a few modulations (key changes), which will have you fretting more chords than in previous songs. At the beginning of the song you hear the chords employed in the chorus:

I – ii – iii – IV –> E – F#m – G#m – A

I – ii – Iii – IV – V – E – F#m – G#m – A – B

This progression is played several times, before the verses, which are in the key of C major. The modulation towards C major is largely done by the bass line.

I – vi – iv – V –> C – Am – Dm – G

I – vi – ii – V7/vi – C – Am – Bm7b5 – E7b9

The E7b9 sounds unexpected in this context, but fits nicely. It can be seen both as a secondary dominant chord (V7/vi) or as a borrowed chord from the parallel minor key (A minor) or as a chromatic mediant of C major. Either way, this chord introduces a modulation to A major, the key of the pre-chorus:

I – vi – ii – II –> A – F#m – Bmin – B

Then you’re back in E major, on time for the chorus.

Then there is that “whooh” interlude with the following chord progression (a personal favourite of mine, by the way). This interlude is in the key of B minor but ends with a so-called Picardy’s third.

VI VII V i VII   –> G A F#/A# Bm A

VI VII V i  –> G A F#/A# B

The B chord takes you back to the first key, and the first chord progression.

To sum up, we have the following structure:

Chorus         – Key: E major – Progression: I ii iii IV and I ii iii IV V

Verses         – Key: C major – Progression: I vi II V and I vi ii V/vi
Pre-Chorus – Key: A major – Progression: I vi ii II

Chorus

Interlude       – Key: B minor – Progression: VI VII V i and VI VII V I

More complex than you expect, right?

Chords for Uptown Girl

Let us now list all the chords that are employed in the original:
E – F#m – G#m – A – B – G – F#

C – Am – Dm – Bmin7b5 – E7b9 – Bmin

Quite a few, as you can see. You may either play the chords I’ve listed. Or you can play a simplified version by means of a capo and less demanding chords:

D – Em – F#m – G – A (for the chorus)

Bb – G – Cm – F – Dm – D7 – Amin – F (for everything else)

Ship to Wreck by Florence and the Machine was a major hit from their third studio album, “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful”. Not only did the song do well commercially, but it also earned several awards, notably a WMA and a Grammy.

The tune is frequently associated with the folk rock, pop rock, and soft rock genres. The song reportedly deals with self-destructive behavior, which offers a nice contrast to the upbeat sound of the tune.

You can learn to play Ship to Wreck by Florence and the Machine with guitar chords, lyrics and a strumming trainer directly in the Uberchord app.

Key of the Song: A minor

The song is in the guitarist-friendly Key of A minor, one key that is commonly used in pop music, too.

Both the intro and the verses employ a turnaround that is amongst my favorites: i – VI – iv – i. In the key of A minor we’d thus have:

Amin – Fmaj7 – Dmin – Amin

The chorus is a bit different. Here we have III – iv – i – VI, which translates into:

C – Dm – Am – Fmaj7

Chords for Ship to Wreck

Since the key is A minor, the choice of chords is rather simple and very easy for beginners. You are probably already acquainted with the chords necessary to play the song.

For the verse, they are:
Am – C – Dm – Fmaj

And, for the chorus:
C – Dm – Am – F

Key of the Song: E major

The song is in the Key of E major and makes use of just a few chords. You don’t really need a capo to play this song. The chord progressions employed are as it follows:

I – ii (intro and verses)

The chorus is simply an expansion of the aforementioned chord progression:

I – ii – IV – V

There is a G#m used before the last chorus. It’s simply the same shape for F#m but played two frets away.

This is by far the best lesson I’ve found, as it comes quite close to the way the chords are played in the original version:

Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys features simple chord progressions and wonderful vocal lines and harmonies on top of a swing-style rhythm section. The song belongs to the “hot rod” genre, which is apparently comprised of songs written for the purpose of singing along during car rides.

According to Brian Wilson, one of the songwriters behind what became a major chart hit, the lyrics for “Little Saint Nick” were written while he was out on a date. The tune went on to sell over one million copies.

You can learn to play Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys with guitar chords, lyrics and a strumming trainer directly in the Uberchord app.

Key of the Song: F# major

The song is in the rather unusual Key of F# major (unusual in pop music, that is). The chord progressions are generally the following:

Intro:

I – ii – V7 x 2
F# – G#min – C#7 x 2

Verses:

ii – V7 – V7/ii which translates into
G#min – C#7 – D#7

IV – V – V/ii – ii – V
B – C#7 – D#7 – G#min – C#7

The song being in the key of F# major implies the following:
– you’ll be playing bar chords for the most part if your guitar is tuned to E standard.

-the guitars in the original recording were tuned one half-step down, and as such, you can tune your guitar to Eb standard and all of a sudden, you’re playing simple chords that require no capo nor barre chords.

Chords for Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys

The original version employs, generally speaking, the following chords:
F# – G#min – C#7 – D#7 – B

There is also an E major thrown in the bridge.

If you, however, want to make things easier, just tune your guitar one-half step down, and then you’ll only have to play the following chords

G – Amin – D7 – F – C – E7

Both the tutorial and lyric sections include extensions of the aforementioned chords. These are gained simply by adding or substracting notes to the chords and shouldn’t give you too much trouble.

Little Saint Nick – Video Lesson

This is perhaps the only lesson I’d recommend, as it comes very close to the original:

Although the sound of the British band Mumford and Sons is usually associated with folk-rock, “Believe”, the main single off the British band’s third album, sticks out from the rest of singles by this British band by featuring a sound that is quite different and has been classified as “Neofolk”. This atmospheric track features soothing layers of sound made up of synth pads, clean guitars and vocal tracks embellished by reverb at a rather slow tempo.

The song is generally viewed as a departure from the band’s usual folk sound and received positive reviews from music critics.

Key of the Song: B minor

The song is in the dark Key of B minor. This means you won’t be doing a whole lot of barre chords.

As far as chord progressions are concerned, you will be switching back and forth between B min and A major in what is a simple i – VII turnaround.

The chorus features a VI – III – i – VII in the same key, which translates into the chords G – D – Bmin and A

Chords for Believe

The chords you’ll need for this song are the following:
B min (or Bmin7) – D – Asus4 – A – G  – F#

It may seem to you like you will be playing a lot of chords for you, but keep in mind that Asus4 is just a slight variation of A. Same applies to B min and Bmin7

American post-grunge band 3 Doors Down landed a major hit with their debut album “The Better Life”, which has sold over five million copies. The lyrics in “Be like that”, the fourth single off the same album, deal with following one’s dreams. The song features a radio-friendly mix of multi-layered acoustic guitars coupled with rock guitars and a simple, yet solid rhythm section.

The band’s frontman and songwriter Brad Arnold claims the writing process was non-linear and that the lyrics for the chorus and verses were written separately. The guitar riff you hear at the beginning was also written by him by means of trial and error. An edited version of the song was featured in the soundtrack for the movie American Pie 2.

You can learn to play the complete Be Like That by 3 Doors Down with guitar chords, lyrics and a strumming trainer directly in the Uberchord app.

Key of the Song: G major

Be Like That is in the guitar-friendly Key of G major, which makes the song quite simple to play and will not require as much effort as the tunes discussed in previous articles.

You will be dealing with the following chord progressions:

I – V – vi – IV is the turnaround you will be playing for both strophes and verses.
G – D – Emin – C

There is a section where you have
ii – IV – I
Amin Cmaj Gmaj

ii – IV – I – III7
Amin Cmaj Gmaj B7 Cmaj

Be Like That Chords

This tune is fairly uncomplicated to play. You can make use of chords you’re most likely acquainted with:

G – D – Em – C – Am – B7

Some guitar teachers don’t lie when they tell you that these four chords are very important, do they…

Though if you want to get as close to the original as possible, you’d have Dsus2 instead of D and Emin7 instead of Emin and Csus2 instead of Cmaj.

That’s pretty much it.

Be Like That – Video Lesson

This is by far the best lesson I’ve encountered.

Be Like That – Lyrics & Chords

Intro

G, Dsus2, Em7, Cadd9

Verse

G Dsus2
He spends his nights in California
Em7 Cadd9
Watching the stars on the big screen
G Dsus2
Then he lies awake and wonders
Em7 Dsus2
Why can’t that be me?
G Dsus2
Cause in his life he’s filled with all these good intentions.
Em7 Cadd9
He’s left a lot of things he’d rather not mention right now.
G Dsus2
But just before he says goodnight,
Em7 Cadd9
He looks up with a little smile at me and he says

Chorus

G
If I could be like that
Dsus2
I’d give anything
Em7
Just to live one day
Cadd9
In those shoes.
G Dsus2
If I could be like that, what would I do?
Em7 C
What would I do?

Bridge

Am Cadd9 G
Now and dreams we run.

Verse

G Dsus2
She spends her days up in the north park,
Em7 Cadd9
watching the people as they pass.
G Dsus2
And all she wants is just a little piece of this dream,
Em7 Cadd9
is that too much to ask?
G Dsus2 Em7 Cadd9
With a safe home and a warm bed, on a quiet little street.
G Dsus2 Em7 C
All she wants is just that something to hold onto, that’s all she needs.

Chorus

Mid section

Am C G
I’m falling into this, in dreams, we run away.

Chorus
Outro

Am
Falling in.
C G G
I feel I am falling into this again.

Are You Stuck in a Rut?

frustrated_guitarThese tips for guitar players are written primarily with beginners in mind, but anybody stuck in a rut could derive some benefit from it. I’m convinced that every guitar player has at some point been in a rut and faced what people call “hitting a wall”.

It’s what happens when you feel like you don’t know what else to learn. You can spend days, weeks and even months playing the same things all over again. Being stuck in a rut can be frustrating and in the worst case scenario, it may even lead to people quitting guitar altogether.

The origin of this article is my own experience as someone who has been there in a rut and successfully managed to move past that stage. In this article I won’t be discussing technique or music theory but rather something very important that is often overlooked:

The mental aspect of being a guitarist.

The following tips will hopefully help you find some new inspiration.

HERE ARE 4 WAYS TO GET OUT OF THAT RUT

1. SET NEW GUITAR GOALS REGULARLY

how-to-set-goalsI like drawing parallels between a musician’s path and that of a sportsman. Common to them both is the pursuit of a goal greater than one’s self. Let’s say you’re obsessed with becoming stronger. You wish to bench 140 kg, which may not be all too difficult for a professional lifter or a strong man.

Nevertheless, it’s a weight that only a select group of people get to the bench during their lifetime. Your goal will have a major impact on the way you approach your diet and training. You won’t just go to the gym, curl some dumbbells for 10 reps and call it a day. If you’re realistic in your goal, you’ll pay special attention to the muscles involved in the bench press and keep track of improvements.

Similarly, if you want to play something beyond your current technical level, you’ll approach that piece or song in a conscious manner, by means of a strategy. But before you have a strategy, you need to know what you want to achieve. Perhaps you don’t just want to master that one song which makes your fingers burn, but you also want to be a faster player or become more fluent in improvisation. Maybe you just want to write better music.

Songwriters Paradise - Lessons About SongwritingPerhaps the best thing you can do to avoid being stuck in a rut is to set new goals across three different fields:

1 – Repertoire: learn more songs.
2 – Technique: reach higher levels of technical proficiency
3 – Theory: learn more about music theory and integrate it into your playing

2. WORK TOWARDS ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS

Now we move on to the practical aspect. It’s safe to say that different people approach the same thing in their own ways. Some strategies to avoid being stuck in a rut do happen to be more effective than others. You can download the latest version of the Uberchord app which helps you learn guitar and track your progress. You can even set daily and weekly reminders, if you are someone who loses focus easily.

Here are some pointers that can hopefully stop you wasting time.

If you’re obsessed with mastering difficult music, start by printing out a score or tablature of the pieces in question. Use a marker to identify spots that you can’t play well (yet) and focus on them. There will be parts that won’t need much practice, but only require work on phrasing and expression (slower parts, for instance).

I personally highlight the measures which require special attention and intensive practice in green. Ask for advice from players who exhibit a great deal of proficiency in the technique that is giving you trouble (don’t take advice from people who are at your level or just slightly above it). You will notice more improvements by means of this approach than just by noodling around, which is a surefire way to avoid improvement and stay stuck in a rut.

3. ACTIVELY SEEK INSPIRATION FROM OTHER GUITAR PLAYERS

One of the most effective ways to get motivated and get out of being stuck in a rut is to inspire yourself from people who are doing what you want to do. For me, it’s hard to watch a video of giants like Steve Vai, Guthrie Govan, Jason Richardson or Michael Romeo playing and not feel the intense need to pick up the guitar and practice. Try it out yourself: watch (don’t just listen) to what your idols have done, and let the inspiration come.

Here is one video by the guitar god himself: Steve Vai on how to stay motivated and be successful

4. MAKE YOUR GUITAR DREAM A REALITY

Relying on a mix of patience, motivation and focused practice, you will find yourself achieving your goals and out of that rut sooner than you thought. Remember to set yourself new goals every now and then, lest you hit another wall. All of the ideas I’ve explained in this article are clearly nothing new or revolutionary.
